Bab Tamazgha: Amazigh tales and legends, region by region
Bab Tamazgha brings to life the Amazigh tales and legends of every region of Morocco, not as a folkloric inventory, but as stories you want to follow to the very end. Each album is rooted in an Amazigh region (the Rif, the Middle Atlas, the Souss) and draws the child into a story carried by the figures of the Amazigh imagination: the spirit of the springs, the djinns of the gorges, the ogresses of evening tales, the animals that speak. The reader discovers, without being told, that they have just stepped into a legend that children still tell, or told only yesterday, in that very same region.
For children aged 3 and up, and for parents, grandparents, and teachers who wish to pass on this memory.
Every child discovers that their own region has its legends, its figures, and its imagination, as rich as any tradition from elsewhere, and gains a sense of cultural and regional pride. They also discover the diversity of Amazigh Morocco, region by region, through its many landscapes, dialects, and stories. In each tale, words of Tamazight and landmarks of Tifinagh slip in, so that the child leaves with a little of the language as well as a story. By giving these tales a lasting form, the collection also helps preserve an endangered oral memory before it fades along with the generations who carried it.
There is no single format: the only thing that unites the books is the essence of Tamazgha. Some albums gather the tales of our ancestors as they were handed down, illustrated and edited for young readers. Others, in large format, explore the figures and deities of Amazigh mythology. Others are new stories, inspired by Amazigh characters and tales, without being faithful transcriptions of an existing story.
Holding a book that tells what one’s memory has always carried strengthens the feeling of belonging to a land, and gives the child who recognizes themselves in it the desire to create in turn, knowing where they come from. Published in English and French, the collection also carries this Amazigh memory beyond Morocco, to enrich the collective memory of humanity.
Two books by Asya Zayzaoui open the collection, offering two different doors into the Amazigh world.
The Telluric Gods of Tamazgha. Giants who shaped the mountains, goddesses of fertility and war, spirits who inhabit every corner of the land: this book brings back an Amazigh mythological heritage that has long remained in the shadows. Through these stories, a whole people sought to understand its place in the cosmos and to make sense of the world. Let us listen together to the murmur of the stones, where the echoes of these forgotten legends still resound.
Amazigh Tales from the Rif. In the rugged mountains of the Rif, generations of storytellers have passed down tales filled with spirits, heroes, and creatures born of earth and sky. This collection brings to life legends rooted in the Amazigh imagination of northern Morocco. A journey into the heart of a region and a memory still too rarely told.
Push open the door and meet the legends.
